Peter Stephens
Peter Stephens’ work is rooted in a fascination with the
fundamental forces of nature—the laws that determine the structure and behavior of matter, and the systems that shape how the world looks and functions. His deep interest in physics and pattern generation informs a painting language
built around systems, mathematics, and the unexpected outcomes they produce.
His current paintings begin with an underlying grid of commercial paint samplecards, creating a spontaneous surface for exploring color relationships within
defined parameters. Hand-applied layers of acrylic elements follow, with quantities, sequences, repetitions, and rhythms creating complex optical blends and seemingly infinite color relationships.
Pure abstraction meets references to art and design history, with echoes of sumptuous textiles and intricate architectural mosaics. Rather than illustrating specific scientific laws, Stephens translates their underlying resonances into multilayered landscapes where color, pattern, and perception unfold one layer at a time.
