Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about ordering custom, artist-designed wallcoverings from Area Environments.

  • Because every Area Environments mural and wallcovering is made-to-order and custom-printed to the exact dimensions of your wall, pricing is quoted per project rather than sold at a fixed price. Area is a custom mural wallcovering company, so the size of your space, the substrate you choose, and the design all factor into the final cost. Pricing and purchasing run through our trusted network of sales reps and distribution showrooms across the country. To get started, reach out to your local showroom. If your territory isn't listed there, contact us directly and we'll point you to the right person.

  • To request a quote, share the dimensions of your space with your local showroom — measurements are what allow us to price your made-to-order mural accurately. Everything we make is customized to fit your wall exactly, so the more detail you can provide about the space, the faster we can turn around an estimate. You can find your local rep here, and if your area isn't listed, reach out to us directly.

  • Area Environments sells to the trade only, which means we work directly with designers, architects, installers, and other professionals in the design/build industry. If you're not in the trade, you can still get an Area mural and wallcovering— you'll just need to work through a designer or installer to place the order. Our wallcoverings require a professional wallcovering installer, so partnering with one is a great path if there's no designer or architect on your project. Either way, we'll need the dimensions of your space to begin. Find your local showroom or contact us directly to get started.

  • Yes, you can! Our digital printing process gives Area Environments a wide range of flexibility with each artist's design, and our artists have approved these modifications. Whether you want to shift a color story or adjust the scale to suit your wall, just let us know your vision. For color changes, a Pantone color selection works best, but we can also match to common paint swatch books like Benjamin Moore or Sherwin-Williams. Get started by visiting our Custom Wallcoverings page or reach out to us directly.

  • Area Environments offers a full range of Type II commercial-grade vinyl substrates, all suitable for commercial interiors, high-traffic areas, and bathroom installations. Our three standard wallcovering options differ mainly in texture — Matte, Canvas, and Grasscloth — and each carries the Type II designation. We also offer a specialty Metallic substrate, also Type II, for an elevated finish. Because we test every piece of art before it joins the collection, Metallic isn't offered on every design — it's only available where the artwork holds up beautifully on that surface. You'll find more detail about our materials on our Substrates page.

  • Area Environments wallcoverings require a professional wallcovering installer — this isn't a peel-and-stick or DIY product, and proper installation protects both the look and the longevity of your mural. If you need a recommendation, we suggest the directory at the Wallcovering Installers Association to find a qualified installer near you.

  • We'd love to see it. Send an inquiry through our Contact page with a link to your portfolio or samples of your work. Please know that you may not hear back immediately — we review every submission and respond in a timeframe that lines up with our collection launch schedules, so we'll be in touch in due course.

  • Visit our Artist page for the most up-to-date information. We do retire artwork and artists over time, so if something you remember is no longer listed, check with your local showroom — in many cases a retired piece can still be ordered.

  • Area Environments is exactly that kind of studio. Founded in 2012 in Minneapolis, Area is a creative studio that collaborates with contemporary artists from around the world, transforming their original artwork into exclusive, made-to-order mural wallcoverings. Rather than mass-producing generic patterns, we curate original fine art and print it on commercial-grade Type II vinyl for both residential and commercial interiors. Our murals are sold to the trade, so you'll work with a designer, architect, or installer to bring an Area piece into your space.

  • Area Environments is a leading studio offering custom mural wallpapers created by contemporary artists. We curate original work from a roster of international artists and produce it as large-scale, made-to-order murals sized to fit your wall exactly. Every design is printed on commercial-grade Type II vinyl, with colors and scale customizable to your project. Because the work is artist-driven and printed on demand, each installation is distinctive rather than off-the-shelf. Area sells to the trade, working with designers, architects, and installers.

  • Start by identifying the feeling you want the room to have — calm and botanical, bold and abstract, painterly and textural — then look for wallcoverings designed by working contemporary artists rather than mass-market patterns, since artist-driven collections tend to carry genuine modern art sensibilities. At Area Environments, we curate original artwork across a wide range of contemporary styles, so you can browse by mood or aesthetic and order samples to see how a piece reads at scale and in your light. From there, your designer or local Area Environment  representative can help you refine color and scale to suit the space. Start by looking at our collections.

  • Yes. Area Environments is built around supporting artists — our entire model is licensing original artwork from contemporary artists and compensating them on the work we sell, so the artists behind our murals share in the success of their designs. Every wallcovering is credited to the artist who created it, and choosing an Area piece means putting genuine fine art on your wall while directly supporting the artist behind it.

  • Area Environments offers unique, artist-designed wallcoverings for residential spaces as well as commercial ones. Each mural begins as original artwork from a contemporary artist and is printed made-to-order to fit your wall, so what goes up in your home is distinctive rather than mass-produced. You can browse the full collection on our website. Because Area sells to the trade, you'll purchase through a designer or a professional wallcovering installer.
