Nicole Rose is a British abstract artist whose luminous oil paintings inhabit the space between memory and landscape. Ambiguous yet deeply evocative, her work captures not what was seen, but what was felt — conjuring a sense of nostalgia, familiarity, and the quiet recognition of place.
Born in London, Rose graduated from Central Saint Martins in 1992 with a BA in Graphic Design. She spent more than two decades running a successful East London design studio before turning to painting full-time. Her background in design continues to inform her practice, evident in her refined compositions, sensitivity to symmetry, and nuanced understanding of how color can suggest emotion and narrative.
Rose’s paintings begin with immersive experiences in the natural world — woodlands, nature reserves, shifting light, distant shorelines. These references are emotional rather than literal. Back in her North London studio, she translates these impressions through multiple layers of blended oil paint. The slow drying process allows memory and time to shape the surface, as colors merge, blur, and subtly shift. The result is an ethereal luminosity — soft, expansive, and reminiscent of the quiet threshold between twilight and dawn.
Her work has been exhibited widely in London and internationally, including at Glasshouse Contemporary, the Affordable Art Fair (London), The Other Art Fair (London and Los Angeles), and Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair. Her paintings have been commissioned by Park Hyatt and the Chancery Rosewood.
