Karen Darling

Trained as an illustrator, Karen Darling worked for many years in the field before becoming a full-time painter and sculptor. Because of her training, she was very comfortable working in a realistic manner, but reached a point when she felt the need to challenge herself further. Exploring new ways of expressing herself led to a much looser and more abstract feel in her figurative work, which in turn led to completely non-objective abstract paintings. The introduction of wax into her painting process has allowed for multiple translucent layers that add depth and ambiguity; scraping back through these layers reveals even more than anticipated. This constant push and pull between happy accident and intentionality is what continues to captivate her.

Karen lives just outside Toronto with her husband and two sons. Her work can be found in collections across North America and Europe.
