Although Nissa Kauppila was born and raised in the small town of Monkton in rural Vermont, her life and creative work now take wing half a world away in China and Australia. Employing centuries-old traditional Chinese techniques of watercolor and ink on rice paper, Kauppila’s work is nevertheless a style all its own. The intricacy of her paintings illuminate her appreciation for – and curiosity about – the powerful dichotomies found in the natural world: strength and fragility, stillness and flight, composure and chaos.
Kauppila holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, as well as an M.Ed. from the University of Vermont. Her paintings have been featured in galleries worldwide, showcased in fashion shoots, and lauded in numerous publications. Kauppila currently resides and works in Hong Kong.
